Status of the Us Heavy Ion Fusion Program*

چکیده
It is a pleasure to be able to come to Abingdon to help in this study of applications of the Spallatron Neutron Source (SNS) to problems of Heavy Ion Fusion (HIF). I feel that I am in a small way repaying those from Rutherford who have contributed so much to our US HIF workshops. In order to review the US HIF program, it is necessary to discuss both the program elements and the political situation. I will start with the latter topic and then present the technical justification for the interest in HIF because it is assumed that not everyone in this audience has heard this story. This will be followed by a brief description of the Argonne Program to develop the rf linac storage ring system for which the SNS can contribute important data. Finally, I will describe the new direction being taken by the Berkeley group to develop the induction linac system.

In order to determine the fusion energy gain in a target due to inertial confinement fusion, it is necessary to solve hydrodynamic equations governed on plasma behavior during confinement time. To compress spherical multilayer targets having fuel in the central part, they are irradiated by laser or heavy ion beams. A suitable mass ratio of a pusher is used to ignite the central part of the ta...

This paper will briefly summarize the concepts of Heavy Ion Fusion (HIF), especially those aspects that are important to its potential for generating electrical power. It will also note highlights of the various HIF programs throughout the world. Especially significant is that the US Department of Energy (DOE) plans a program, beginning in 1984, aimed at determining the feasibility of using hea...
متن کاملEnergy Gain of Magnetized Cylindrical D-T Targets in Fast Ignition Fusion
In recent years, many different plans have been considered to use the nuclear energy gained from inertial confinement fusion (ICF) as attempts to obtain high energy efficiencies. In conventional ICF methods, a small amount (about mg) of the deuterium–tritium compound is confined in a small spherical chamber of a few millimeters in radius and compressed by laser or heavy ion beams with powers in...
متن کاملInduction Linac Drivers for Heavy Ion Fusion*
The Heavy Ion Fusion Accelerator Research (HIFAR) program of the USDOE has for several years concentrated on developing linear induction accelerators as Inertial Fusion (IF) drivers. This accelerator technology is suitable for the IF application because it is readily capable of accelerating short, intense pulses of charged particles with good electrical efficiency. The principal technical diffi...
